Revolutionizing Teacher Training with Traditional Indian Games: A Workshop with V-LEAD

On February 19th, 2026, the Roll the Dice team had the privilege of conducting a specialized workshop at RIMSE, Mysore. This session was a key component of the Future Teachers Training Program, an inspiring initiative by the Vivekananda Learning and Development (V-LEAD) Foundation (part of the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement - SVYM).

We spent the day with a group of 35 passionate trainee teachers, exploring how traditional board games like Aadu Huli, Navakankari, Aliguli Mane, and Chowka Bara can be transformed into effective classroom tools.
The "Aha!" Moments: From Play to Pedagogy
The feedback from these future educators was overwhelming. For many, the initial reaction was a mix of curiosity and "good kind" of confusion. As they navigated the strategies of the tiger and the goats or the mathematical cycles of Aliguli Mane, they began to see these games through a professional lens.
Key insights extracted from their reflection worksheets include:
- Cognitive Powerhouses: Trainees identified that Aadu Huli and Navakankari are not just games; they are exercises in critical thinking, pattern recognition, and long-term planning.
- Math Made Tangible: Aliguli Mane was hailed as a "mathematical savior," perfect for teaching addition, multiplication tables, and number sense in a way that feels like play rather than rote learning.
- The Emotional Quotient: Teachers noted that Chowka Bara is a masterclass in patience, sportsmanship, and accepting failure with a positive mindset.

One of the most striking takeaways was the consensus that these games are for "All Ages". Our trainee teachers didn't just see them in a math period; they proposed using them:
