Unlike some Hindu deities, there is no single story in the major scriptures describing the exact moment when Goddess Lakshmi chose the owl (Uluka) as her vahana (vehicle). Instead, Hindu tradition and later Puranic interpretations explain the symbolism through a well-known devotional story.

Long ago, after Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the Ocean of Milk and became the goddess of wealth and prosperity, she traveled across the worlds to bless people. As she observed humanity, she noticed that many people desired wealth but often forgot wisdom, humility, and righteousness. Some became greedy, while others misused the riches they received.

Lakshmi wanted a companion that would constantly remind people that wealth must be guided by wisdom. She looked at many animals, but the owl impressed her. The owl remains calm and alert, can see clearly even in darkness, and patiently waits before acting. These qualities represented the wisdom needed to recognize the difference between right and wrong, even when life is confusing.

The owl also symbolized caution. It reminded people that wealth can either bring happiness when used wisely or become a source of pride and suffering when misused. By choosing the owl as her vahana, Lakshmi taught that prosperity should never lead to arrogance or selfishness.

From that day onward, the owl, known as Uluka, accompanied Goddess Lakshmi wherever she went. Together they symbolize that true prosperity is not measured only by money but by wisdom, humility, generosity, and good character.
