Story of how Lord Shiva chose Nandi as his Vahana

Long ago, Lord Shiva did not have a permanent vahana (vehicle). Many divine beings admired Shiva and wished to serve him.

At the same time, there lived a sage named Sage Shilada. He wished for a son who would always be devoted to God and would never leave the path of righteousness. So he prayed to Lord Shiva with great devotion. One day, while ploughing his field for a sacred ritual, he found a glowing baby boy emerging from the earth! The sage was overjoyed and named him Nandi, which means joy or happiness.

Don't worry, father. Lord Shiva will protect me.

Nandi went to a forest and meditated with full concentration and chanted Om Namah Shivaya. For many days and nights without giving up. His devotion was so pure that finally Lord Shiva and Parvati appeared before him.

Shiva blessed Nandi with:
  • A long and immortal life
  • Great strength and wisdom
  • The position of leader of all Shiva's attendants
  • A permanent place beside him

From that day onwards, Nandi became the sacred bull of Lord Shiva and the guardian of every Shiva temple. This is the reason why even today, whenever devotees visit Shiva temple, they first bow to Nandi before worshipping Lord Shiva.

Fun ending

Imagine Shiva asking 'Who will guard my home?' Nandi happily says 'Me! And I'll never take a day off!' Shiva laughs 'Perfect! You're not just my guard, you'll be my best friend and my vahana forever!'

Nandi is the sacred bull, the vahana and the chief devotee of Lord Shiva. More than just Shiva's mount, Nandi is the guardian of Kailash, the protector of Lord Shiva temples and the leader of Shiva's attendants. The name Nandi comes from the Sanskrit word Nanda, which means joy, happiness, and bliss. Nandi teaches that true happiness comes through devotion, righteousness, and selfless service.
