Daughter of the Mountain
Parvati is one of the principal goddesses in Hinduism. She is the embodiment of love, compassion, strength, devotion, fertility, and divine energy (Shakti). She is the wife of Shiva and the mother of Ganesha and Kartikeya.
The name Parvati means daughter of the mountain, because she was born as the daughter of the Himalayan king Himavan and Queen Mena.
Short story about Lord Parvati
Long ago, Shiva's first wife, Sati, sacrificed herself after her father insulted Shiva. Shiva was heartbroken and withdrew into deep meditation.
To restore balance in the universe, Sati was reborn as Parvati, the daughter of Himavan and Mena.
From childhood, Parvati loved Shiva and wished to marry him. She performed years of severe meditation and penance with unwavering devotion. Her determination impressed Shiva, who accepted her as his wife.

Nandi (the bull)
When Parvati is depicted together with her husband Shiva, she is sometimes shown seated with him on Nandi. However, Nandi is Shiva's vahana, not Parvati's independent vahana. Nandi is not simply a bull.

No. Nandi belongs to Shiva. However, because Shiva and Parvati are inseparable, many sculptures and paintings show both of them seated on Nandi. This does not make Nandi Parvati's independent vahana.

How did Parvati choose her vahana
Unlike the stories of Shiva accepting Nandi, Vishnu accepting Garuda, or Ganesha accepting the mouse, there is no widely accepted Hindu scripture that narrates a single story of Parvati choosing a lion or tiger as her personal vahana.
Instead, the association comes through her manifestations:
- As the gentle Parvati, she is usually depicted standing or seated beside Shiva rather than riding an animal.
- As Durga, she is depicted riding a lion (or sometimes a tiger), emphasizing her role as the protector who destroys evil.
One well-known tradition tells that when the gods created Durga to defeat the buffalo demon Mahishasura, she was given divine weapons by the gods. In many retellings, the lion was also presented to her by the gods—often associated with the Himalayas or the mountain king Himavan—to serve as her mount during the battle. This highlights that the lion was a divine companion in her mission rather than an animal she selected after a personal test or contest.
