Another famous story tells that the sage Vyasa asked Ganesha to write down the epic Mahabharata as he dictated it.
Ganesha agreed on one condition: Vyasa must recite continuously without stopping.
During the writing, Ganesha's pen broke. Rather than interrupt the work, he broke off one of his own tusks and used it as a pen, showing that dedication to knowledge is more important than personal comfort.
The Demon Mushikasura
Long ago, there lived a powerful demon named Mushikasura. He had received boons that made him proud and arrogant.
Instead of using his strength for good, Mushikasura:
The sages prayed to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, for help.
The Battle
Ganesha confronted Mushikasura and asked him to stop troubling innocent people. The demon laughed and challenged Ganesha to a battle.
A fierce fight followed. Mushikasura changed his form many times to escape Ganesha. Finally, he transformed into a giant mouse, hoping to run into tiny holes where no one could catch him.
But Ganesha was wiser than the demon. He threw his noose (Pasha), which caught the mouse. No matter how hard Mushikasura struggled, he could not escape.
The Demon Surrenders
Realizing he had been defeated, Mushikasura bowed before Ganesha and said: 'Lord, I understand my pride has led me astray. Please forgive me.'
Ganesha smiled and forgave him. Instead of punishing him forever, Ganesha said: 'If you truly wish to change, then serve me.'
Mushikasura gladly accepted.
Becoming Ganesha's Vahana
Ganesha then chose the mouse as his vahana (vehicle). At first, the mouse could not bear Ganesha's divine weight and trembled.
Seeing this, Ganesha reduced his own weight through his divine power, making it possible for the mouse to carry him comfortably.
From that day onward, the mouse became known as Mushika, the faithful vehicle of Lord Ganesha.
