Long ago, the great sage Kashyapa had two wives, Vinata and Kadru. Vinata gave birth to a magnificent son named Garuda. From the moment he was born, Garuda was no ordinary bird. His body shone like gold, his wings stretched across the sky, and his strength was so great that even the gods were amazed.
One day, Vinata lost a wager to her sister Kadru because of a trick. As a result, Vinata had to become Kadru's servant. Garuda could not bear to see his loving mother living as a slave. He went to the serpent sons of Kadru, called the Nagas, and asked, "What must I do to free my mother?"
The Nagas laughed and replied, "Bring us the pot of Amrita, the nectar of immortality, from heaven. Only then will we set your mother free."
Although the task seemed impossible, Garuda did not hesitate. His love for his mother gave him the courage to try. He spread his mighty wings and soared into the heavens.
On his journey, Garuda faced many dangers. He crossed blazing fires, escaped deadly spinning weapons, and defeated powerful celestial warriors who guarded the nectar. At last, through his strength, wisdom, and determination, he reached the sacred pot of Amrita and carried it away.
As Garuda flew back through the skies, Lord Vishnu appeared before him. Vishnu had watched everything. He had seen Garuda's incredible courage, but what impressed Him most was that Garuda had not fought for power, riches, or fame. He had risked his life only to save his mother.
Smiling with great affection, Lord Vishnu said, "Garuda, your strength is extraordinary, but your love, humility, and devotion are even greater. Ask Me for any boon."
Garuda folded his wings respectfully and replied, "My Lord, I seek no wealth or kingdom. Bless me that I may always remain strong, fearless, and devoted to righteousness."
Vishnu was deeply pleased by such a selfless request. He said, "Garuda, from this day onward, you shall always be by My side. I choose you as My eternal vahana. Together we shall travel the worlds, protecting goodness and destroying evil."
With tears of joy, Garuda bowed before the Lord and accepted the honor with humility. From that day on, whenever Lord Vishnu appeared to protect the universe, He rode upon Garuda, the mighty king of birds. Garuda became a symbol of courage, devotion, loyalty, and selfless service.
And so, Vishnu did not choose Garuda simply because he was the strongest. He chose him because he had a heart filled with love, humility, and unwavering devotion. The bond between Vishnu and Garuda reminds us that true greatness comes not from power alone, but from using that power to serve others with kindness and righteousness.
