The Way He Chose His Vahana

According to the Skanda Purana and the Kanda Puranam, the story of Lord Kartikeya choosing the peacock and the rooster begins with the mighty demon king Surapadman, who had gained immense powers through severe penance. Instead of using his strength for good, he became arrogant and tormented the Devas (celestial beings), sages, and innocent people. To restore peace and righteousness, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's divine energy manifested as Lord Kartikeya, who was destined to defeat Surapadman. Armed with the sacred Vel (divine spear) gifted by Goddess Parvati, Kartikeya led the celestial army into battle. Surapadman used his magical powers to transform into many fierce forms—including a lion, an elephant, a serpent, and finally a gigantic mango tree—to escape defeat. Realizing that the demon's arrogance still remained, Kartikeya hurled his Vel, which split the mango tree into two halves. From one half emerged a magnificent peacock, and from the other came a rooster (Seval). At that moment, Surapadman repented sincerely, bowed before Lord Kartikeya, and begged for forgiveness. Rather than destroying him completely, Kartikeya showed divine compassion. He transformed the peacock into his vahana (vehicle), symbolizing that pride and ego can be transformed into humility and devoted service. He accepted the rooster as the emblem on his battle flag (Seval Kodi), where it would forever proclaim the victory of righteousness, wisdom, and the triumph of light over darkness. Through this act, Lord Kartikeya demonstrated that true victory is not merely the destruction of evil but the transformation of a repentant soul into an eternal servant of the Divine.
